Loudness, handled
Every track you upload is measured for loudness and true peak. If it would sound softer than the rest of a playlist, or its peaks could distort in the stores' encoders, one switch delivers it at the level Spotify plays everything at — and your original master stays exactly as you made it. Need a file for somewhere else? The LUFS normalizer in Tools does it right in your browser, with before/after listening.
LUFS
LUFS (Loudness Units relative to Full Scale) measure how loud a whole track sounds to a listener — not just its loudest peak. The lower the number, the quieter: −14 LUFS is quieter than −8.
−14 LUFS
Spotify, YouTube, Tidal and Amazon Music play every track at about −14 LUFS; Apple Music at −16. Louder masters are turned down; quiet ones can only come up as far as their peaks allow — so they end up softer than the rest.
−1 dBTP
True peak is the loudest point once the audio is turned back into sound. Above −1 dBTP it can crackle after the stores convert your file. We measure it on every upload, and the normalizer keeps it under the line.
